About the Northern Ireland Theory Test

The Northern Ireland Theory Test is administered by the DVA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency). It is the first formal step towards obtaining a full UK driving licence.

The test consists of two parts taken in the same session:

  • Multiple choice questions: 50 questions — you must score at least 43 (86%) to pass.
  • Hazard perception: 14 video clips — you must score at least 44 out of 75 marks.

You must pass both parts on the same day. If you fail one part, you must retake the entire test.

Our practice tests cover the multiple choice section. Aim for 96% or above in practice to feel confident on test day.

5 Tips to Pass First Time

  1. Study the Highway Code thoroughly — all questions are based on it.
  2. Practice regularly on this site — aim for 96%+ before booking your test.
  3. Review every incorrect answer to understand why it's wrong.
  4. Practise hazard perception using the official DVSA materials.
  5. Book your test when you're consistently scoring above the pass mark.

Northern Ireland Theory Test FAQs

The Northern Ireland Theory Test is administered by DVA (Driver and Vehicle Agency) rather than DVSA. The test content, question count (50), and pass mark (43/50) are the same, but you must book through nidirect.gov.uk/services/dvani-theory-test.

Book through nidirect.gov.uk or by calling the DVA on 0345 600 6700. You need your Northern Ireland provisional licence number. The fee is £23 — the same as Great Britain.

Northern Ireland uses the same limit as England and Wales: 80mg per 100ml of blood (0.08% BAC). This is higher than Scotland's 50mg limit.

You need a Northern Ireland provisional driving licence issued by DVA. Apply at nidirect.gov.uk/apply-first-provisional-driving-licence. The fee is £34.

Most rules are the same as Great Britain under the Highway Code. Some local differences exist, particularly relating to speed limit signage and enforcement agencies. The Theory Test questions reflect NI-specific rules where applicable.
