Pass Plus Guide

Post-test training for new drivers that can improve your skills and reduce insurance premiums.

What is Pass Plus?

Pass Plus is an optional, practical training course designed for newly qualified drivers (within 12 months of passing their driving test). It is registered with DVSA and taken with an approved driving instructor (ADI).

The course covers 6 modules, each taking approximately 1 hour:

Module 1
Town driving

Urban hazards, one-way streets, bus lanes, traffic management

Module 2
All-weather driving

Rain, fog, ice — reducing speed and increasing following distance

Module 3
Out of town driving

Higher speeds, country roads, overtaking, anticipation

Module 4
Night driving

Using headlights, reduced visibility, hazard awareness after dark

Module 5
Dual carriageways

Joining, lane discipline, overtaking, leaving

Module 6
Motorway driving

Joining, lane discipline, smart motorways, breakdowns

Cost & Insurance Benefits

Pass Plus typically costs £150–£200 depending on your location and instructor. There is no test at the end — your ADI assesses you throughout the course.

Many insurers offer discounts to Pass Plus holders, although this varies. Some councils previously offered subsidised Pass Plus — check your local council website.

Always get insurance quotes with and without your Pass Plus certificate to check if the discount outweighs the course cost.
