Everything you need to know about the DVSA Theory Test — format, booking, pass marks, and how to prepare.
What is the Theory Test?
The UK Theory Test is administered by the DVSA (Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency) in Great Britain, and the DVA in Northern Ireland. It must be passed before you can book your practical driving test.
The test has two parts, both taken in the same session at a DVSA test centre:
Part 1: Multiple Choice
- 50 questions
- 57 minutes allowed
- Pass mark: 43/50 (86%)
- 4 answer options per question
Part 2: Hazard Perception
- 14 video clips
- 1 clip has 2 scoreable hazards
- Pass mark: 44/75
- Click when you see a hazard developing
You must pass both parts on the same day. If you fail either part, you must retake the entire test.
